Abstract: Opposition is an integral part of any democratic system and its presence is necessary for the smooth functioning of democracy. Its main resposibilities are to keep checks and balances on activities of the government, criticize its wrong policies, to protect the rights of oppressed people, and at the same time to offer credible alternate policies. But unfortunately, opposition did not perform a constructive role in Pakistan. Its main role remained how to dislodge the existing government by hook or crook. While on the other hand ruling elite used state power to restrain the activities of the opposition. This Tug of War weakens the democratic system and paved the way for military intervention. To stabilize the democratic system the government and opposition should adopt accommodating policies. Political parties have to follow political norms as well as respect the mandate of the people. Opposition should avoid confrontational politics and use the forum of parliament to settle the political differences.
